Season FAQ

When is the best time to go freediving in India overall?expand_more

November to April is the prime window for most Indian freediving destinations. The northeast monsoon ends by November on the Andaman and Lakshadweep coasts, while the southwest monsoon (June–September) affects the west coast and Konkan. For year-round diving, the Andaman Islands and Lakshadweep offer the longest peak seasons.

Which Indian location has the best underwater visibility for freediving?expand_more

Lakshadweep consistently offers the best visibility in India — up to 30–40m in its lagoons during the peak season (November to April). The Andaman Islands come second at 20–30m. Both require permits and advance planning. Netrani and Bhogwe on the mainland coast offer 15–20m visibility in their best months.

Can I freedive in India during the monsoon season?expand_more

Most dive sites in India are unsafe or inaccessible during the southwest monsoon (June–September). The Andaman Sea and Lakshadweep experience rough swells, strong currents, and zero visibility. Pondicherry, on the Bay of Bengal, has its rough season during the northeast monsoon (October–December) instead. There is no Indian site with good year-round conditions.

Is the water warm enough to freedive in India without a thick wetsuit?expand_more

Indian waters are generally warm — 26–30°C in most dive sites during peak season. A 3mm wetsuit or shorty is sufficient for the Andamans and Lakshadweep. The Konkan coast (Bhogwe, Netrani) drops to 22–24°C in winter, where a 5mm wetsuit is recommended, especially for multiple dives.

How do I get a permit to freedive in Lakshadweep?expand_more

Foreign nationals require a special entry permit for Lakshadweep issued by the UT administration, obtained before arrival. Indian nationals do not need a special permit but must book through an authorised tour operator. Only designated islands are open to tourists — Agatti, Bangaram, Kadmat, and Minicoy are the main diving destinations.

What are the best months for freediving in Andaman?expand_more

December to April is the prime Andaman freediving season — water is calm, visibility peaks at 25–30m, and the northeast monsoon has fully cleared. March and April see the warmest water (28–29°C). December and January are the peak tourist months — expect more boats and people at popular sites.

Is Pondicherry good for freediving beginners?expand_more

Yes. Pondicherry (Auroville Beach area) has gentle, calm conditions from February to May, with an artificial reef at 10–12m depth that is suitable for AIDA 1–2 level divers. Visibility is lower than the Andamans (10–15m maximum) but conditions are predictable and several certified instructors are based there year-round.

What is the water temperature like for freediving in Netrani Island?expand_more

Netrani Island off the Karnataka coast has water temperatures between 24–28°C. October to March is the best season — calm seas, visibility up to 20m. It is a day trip from Murdeshwar or Gokarna. The island has no accommodation — you travel by boat and return the same day.
