Freediving
Netrani Island
India's whale shark capital — dramatic walls and pristine open-ocean biodiversity.
Netrani Island — also known as Pigeon Island — is a small uninhabited rock off the Karnataka coast near Murdeshwar, and one of India's most exciting freediving destinations. The island is surrounded by dramatic underwater topography: steep walls descend from 10 metres to beyond 45m, and the open-ocean position attracts large pelagic species that rarely appear at inshore reefs. Whale sharks are a near-regular sighting from October through March, making Netrani one of the few places in India where freedivers can reliably encounter the world's largest fish on a single breath of air.
Dive Sites
North Wall
10–45m+The main dive site on Netrani — a sheer wall that begins at 10m and drops beyond the recreational freediving limit. Strong currents along the wall attract schools of jacks, barracuda, and pelagic hunters. Whale sharks are most frequently sighted here during their feeding season.
South Reef
5–20mA more sheltered site with a mixed reef and sand bottom. Good for intermediate freedivers and those focusing on marine life photography. Nurse sharks rest on the sand at 12–15m.
The Cleaning Station
8–18mA coral head at mid-depth where manta rays occasionally stop to be cleaned by wrasse. Not guaranteed, but sightings are reported several times per season.

Getting There
Drive or fly to Murdeshwar (Karnataka). Murdeshwar is 170km north of Mangalore (3 hours) and 490km from Goa (8 hours). Day-trip boats depart from Murdeshwar jetty at approximately 6–7am and take 1.5–2 hours each way. Some operators in Bhatkal also offer trips. There is no accommodation on Netrani itself — all visits are day trips.
Where to Stay
Murdeshwar town has budget hotels and a handful of decent resorts. The Namma Murdeshwar Hotel and RNS Dwaraka are popular with divers. Bhatkal (30km south) has more options. Book ahead during whale shark season (Oct–Dec).
Freediving Courses
Netrani is not suitable for first-time divers — the open ocean conditions and currents require at least AIDA 2 certification. Several operators based in Goa and Mangalore run guided freediving trips to Netrani. An AIDA 2 certification from any recognised school qualifies you to join these trips.
