Freediving
Pondicherry (Auroville Coast)
Close to Chennai, active training community, and the most consistent year-round pool scene in South India.
Pondicherry has emerged as one of the most active freediving communities in South India, centred around a group of certified instructors who run year-round pool training and open-water courses off the Auroville coastline. The town's proximity to Chennai (3 hours by road) makes it the default training base for freedivers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka. Open-water conditions are best January to April, when the Bay of Bengal settles after the northeast monsoon and visibility reaches 12–15 metres on a good day.

Pondicherry is 3 hours from Chennai by road (150km on NH32 — well-maintained). Direct buses run from Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) every 30 minutes. The nearest airport is Chennai International (MAA). Pondicherry Airport (PNY) has limited domestic connectivity — check current schedules.
Where to Stay
The French Quarter (White Town) is the most atmospheric place to stay in Pondicherry, with heritage guesthouses from ₹1,500/night. For dive access, staying near the East Coast Road or Auroville is more convenient. Auroville has its own accommodation system (booking via auroville.org). Budget to mid-range hotels along ECR are the most practical for divers.
Freediving Courses
AIDA 1 and AIDA 2 courses are available year-round through local instructors, with pool sessions conducted in Pondicherry and Auroville pools. Open water sessions are timed to the January–April calm season. Contact FAI's instructor directory for current instructors in the area.
