Freediving
Lakshadweep (Bangaram & Agatti)
Maldivian clarity without the crowd — India's highest-visibility freediving.
Lakshadweep is an archipelago of 36 coral atolls in the Arabian Sea, 200–400km west of the Kerala coast. Its visibility rivals the Maldives — 25–40 metres is common, and on flat calm days in January–February you can see the bottom from the surface at 20 metres. Access is tightly controlled by the Indian government to protect the ecosystem, and only a handful of registered operators can take visitors to the premium islands. The result is some of the most pristine coral reefs in Asia, with zero commercial fishing pressure and healthy populations of spinner dolphins, reef sharks, and eagle rays.
Dive Sites
Bangaram Atoll Rim
10–40m+The outer rim of Bangaram atoll drops sharply from the reef flat into deep blue water. The coral formations on the outer wall are in exceptional condition. Spinner dolphins frequently patrol the atoll rim at dawn.
Agatti Lagoon
3–15mThe inner lagoon is a protected, flat-calm environment with 15–20m visibility. Perfect for STA training, AIDA 1–2 open water training, and leisurely reef exploration. The white sand bottom reflects light, creating an otherworldly training environment.
Kalpitti Channel
8–25mA channel between two atolls with gentle current and high fish density. Eagle rays glide through the channel in the mornings, and the coral is largely untouched by human activity.

Getting There
Fly from Kochi (COK) to Agatti Island (AGX) — approximately 1.5 hours. Flights are operated by Air India and Indigo (limited schedule, book very early). From Agatti, transfers to Bangaram or other islands are by speedboat or traditional dhow. Entry requires a Lakshadweep entry permit (Union Territory permit), obtainable only through government-approved operators such as SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports) or registered private operators.
Where to Stay
Bangaram Island Resort is the most established freediving-friendly accommodation, with direct water access from the beach. Agatti has smaller guesthouses. All accommodation must be booked through registered operators. Budget for ₹12,000–₹25,000 per night inclusive, as most packages include meals and transport.
Freediving Courses
Lakshadweep is best suited for freedivers with at least AIDA 2 certification due to the open water conditions. Some operators on Bangaram offer introductory freediving experiences (supervised, no certification required) in the lagoon. For structured courses, certify elsewhere first and come to Lakshadweep for the experience.
