Freediving
Bhogwe (Divers of Vingoria)
India's most authentic grassroots freediving community — on the wild Konkan coast.
Bhogwe is a small fishing village on the Sindhudurg coastline of Maharashtra, where the rocky Konkan shoreline meets clear Arabian Sea water. It is home to the Divers of Vingoria — one of India's most dedicated grassroots freediving communities, organising regular group dives, training sessions, and ocean cleanups. Unlike commercial freediving destinations, Bhogwe offers an immersive community experience: local freedivers know every reef, cave, and seasonal sighting. The dive season runs October to April, with guitar sharks, rays, and rich macro life found along the rocky reefs. Its proximity to Goa (2 hours) makes it an easy extension of any Goa trip, and several Divers of Vingoria members can guide you to the best spots along this largely unexplored stretch of coastline.
Dive Sites
Bhogwe Rock Reef
8–20mThe main local dive site — a rocky reef running parallel to the shore with gorgonian fans, nudibranchs, and resident moray eels. The reef structure creates natural channels that concentrate fish life. Best dived at high tide with minimal swell.
Konkan Caves
10–18mA series of submerged rock overhangs and small cave systems known to local divers. Lobsters, sleeping nurse sharks, and octopus are commonly encountered here. Entry is best arranged through local community members.
Pelagic Blue
15–25mAn offshore drift site used by experienced local freedivers during the calm season (Oct–Feb). Rays and open-water fish are common. Requires calm sea state and is reached by local fishing boat. Not suitable for beginners.

Getting There
Drive from Goa (approximately 2 hours north via NH66) or from Mumbai (6–7 hours south). The nearest railway station is Kudal, 20km from Bhogwe — take a local auto or taxi from there. The village is accessible by road year-round. Contact the Divers of Vingoria community in advance to coordinate dive logistics and local guides.
Where to Stay
Bhogwe has simple guesthouses and homestays operated by local families. Accommodation is basic but authentic — expect home-cooked Malvani seafood and warm hospitality. Tarkarli (10km south) has more resort options for those who prefer greater comfort. Book ahead during peak season (Nov–Jan).
Freediving Courses
The Divers of Vingoria community welcomes visiting freedivers of all levels and can connect you with local guides for reef dives. Structured AIDA courses are best completed in the Andamans or Pondicherry before visiting Bhogwe — the site is ideal for those with at least AIDA 2 certification looking for authentic community diving rather than a formal course.
