Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need scuba experience to take a freediving course?expand_more
No. Freediving and scuba diving are independent skill sets. A scuba background is neither required nor especially helpful for freediving — the breath-hold and equalization techniques are completely different.
Which certification does FAI recommend?expand_more
FAI recommends Molchanovs for the depth and quality of its curriculum. The Molchanovs system — founded by world record holder Natalia Molchanovs — is widely regarded as the most technically rigorous freediving education available and is fully internationally recognised. AIDA is also a respected option and required for AIDA competition entry.
Can I do Molchanovs Wave 1 without prior experience?expand_more
Yes — Molchanovs Wave 1 has no prerequisite beyond swimming ability and the medical self-declaration. It is designed as the entry point to the Molchanovs curriculum and covers both pool and open water.
How long does it take to get to Molchanovs Wave 2?expand_more
Wave 2 requires Wave 1 certification. Most freedivers progress within 3–6 months of completing Wave 1 once they have built consistent pool and open-water practice.
Where in India can I take a Molchanovs course?expand_more
Havelock Island (Andaman) is the best location for Molchanovs open-water training due to visibility and depth access. Check the FAI Directory for verified Molchanovs instructors near you.
