Where to Certify in India
Andaman Islands
Oct – May
All levels: AIDA 1★–3★, Molchanovs Wave 1–2
India's best freediving destination — 20–25m+ visibility, 28°C water year-round. Highest concentration of certified schools in India.
Bhogwe, Konkan
Oct – Mar
AIDA 2★–3★, Molchanovs Wave 1–2
Divers of Vingoria runs highly regarded courses from Bhogwe. Less crowded than the Andamans with excellent training conditions on the rocky Konkan coast.
Pondicherry
Nov – Apr
AIDA 1★–2★, intro courses
Most budget-friendly option in south India. Good for AIDA 1★ and 2★ beginners. Visibility lower than Andamans but conditions are safe and manageable.
Certification FAQ
Which certification is best for beginners in India — AIDA or Molchanovs?expand_more
Either is excellent. AIDA has wider school availability across India, so you'll have more options for where to learn. Molchanovs tends to have a more structured technique curriculum. If there's a Molchanovs school near you, it's worth considering. Otherwise, start with AIDA — you can cross-train later if needed.
Are AIDA and Molchanovs certifications interchangeable?expand_more
They are generally accepted interchangeably by dive operators. For competition, AIDA certifications are the standard, though Molchanovs schools typically teach AIDA-aligned standards for depth and time minimums. Check with your destination operator if you have specific requirements.
How long should I wait between AIDA 2★ and AIDA 3★?expand_more
AIDA recommends a minimum of 6 months of regular diving experience after your 2★ before attempting 3★. You also need to demonstrate minimum personal bests in static, dynamic, and depth. Don't rush — diving comfortably to 20–25m with strong technique is more important than the cert card.
Can I teach freediving with an AIDA 3★?expand_more
No. To teach freediving you need an AIDA Instructor 1 (AI) certification at minimum, which requires AIDA 3★ plus an instructor course. Some instructor training pathways accept AIDA 4★ for higher instructor grades. The Molchanovs and SSI instructor tracks have similar prerequisites.
Is PADI freediving certification good?expand_more
PADI Freediver certifications (Basic, Freediver, Advanced) are recognised internationally. However, PADI certification is less common in India — most schools here run AIDA or Molchanovs programmes. PADI Freediver is generally equivalent to AIDA 2★ for recreational purposes.
Where can I get certified in India?expand_more
The Andaman Islands (Havelock/Neil Island) have the highest concentration of certified schools. Bhogwe on the Konkan coast (Divers of Vingoria) is highly recommended. Pondicherry, Lakshadweep, and Netrani also have trained instructors. See our full instructor directory at /directory.
Do certifications expire?expand_more
AIDA, Molchanovs, and SSI certifications do not expire. However, if you haven't dived for 12+ months, most reputable dive operators will ask you to do a refresher dive before joining a deep dive trip. The skills decay — don't skip the refresh.
What is the cheapest way to get certified in India?expand_more
Pondicherry and the Konkan coast (Bhogwe) generally offer lower prices than the Andamans, partly because accommodation and travel are cheaper. An AIDA 2★ in Pondicherry can cost ₹12,000–₹15,000 all-in. Budget an additional ₹3,000–₹8,000 for travel and stay. Group courses are often cheaper per person than private instruction.
