The Complete Guide to AIDA Freediving Certification in India
Freediving is one of the fastest-growing water sports in India, and for good reason. Whether you're a scuba diver looking for a new challenge, a swimmer who wants to explore the underwater world more freely, or a complete beginner, an AIDA freediving certification is the internationally recognised standard that will take you there safely.
As the AIDA-affiliated national body for India, the Freediving Association of India (FAI) is your authoritative source on everything certification-related in the country.
What is AIDA?
AIDA International is the world's oldest and most respected freediving organisation, founded in 1992. AIDA certifications are recognised globally, meaning your qualification is valid whether you're diving in the Andaman Islands, the Maldives, or the Mediterranean.
AIDA Certification Levels
AIDA 1 — Introduction
A one-day introductory course in a pool. No prerequisites. You'll learn the fundamentals of breath-hold diving, basic safety, and equalisation. Typical depth: 10m in confined water.
AIDA 2 — Freediver
The first full certification. Covers theory, pool sessions, and open water dives to 20m. This is the most popular entry-level course for beginners.
AIDA 3 — Advanced Freediver
For divers comfortable at 20m. Open water dives to 30m, advanced equalisation techniques, and no-fins disciplines. Requires a valid AIDA 2.
AIDA 4 — Master Freediver
An expert-level course for divers reaching 40m+. Includes advanced safety and rescue protocols.
AIDA Instructor
For those who want to teach. Requires AIDA 4 and significant dive experience.

- Pondicherry — India's most accessible freediving destination from major southern cities, with structured course offerings year-round.
- Bhogwe, Maharashtra — On the Arabian Sea, Divers of Vingoria offer personalised freediving experiences on the Konkan coast — ideal for divers based in Mumbai or Pune. Read our full guide.

What Does a Course Cost?
AIDA 2 courses in India typically range from ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 depending on the location and instructor. This usually includes pool and open water sessions, certification card, and course materials.
Is AIDA Better Than PADI or SSI Freediving?
All three agencies offer solid freediving education. AIDA is the most widely recognised globally for freediving specifically, with the deepest international network of instructors and competition integration. PADI and SSI are larger scuba organisations that also offer freediving tracks — great if you're already in the PADI/SSI ecosystem.
