Molchanovs Wave 2 is the first internationally recognised open-water freediving certification — the level where you learn proper technique, safety protocols, and equalisation, and certify to depths of around 20 metres. Developed by world record holder Alexey Molchanovs and his mother Natalia Molchanovs, the Molchanovs curriculum is widely regarded as the most technically rigorous freediving education available. In India, courses are run at a handful of locations year-round, primarily in the Andaman Islands, Goa, and Pondicherry.
Prerequisites
Molchanovs Wave 2 has no formal prior freediving certification requirement. You need to be:
- 18+ years old (16–18 with parental consent)
- Able to swim 200 metres comfortably (non-stop, any style)
- In good general health — a medical self-declaration is required; certain conditions (asthma, ear surgery, heart conditions) require a doctor's sign-off
No scuba licence or previous breath-hold experience is needed. Completing Wave 1 (pool only) first is recommended but not mandatory.
Course Structure
A standard Molchanovs Wave 2 course runs 2–3 days and includes three components:
Theory (4–6 hours): Freediving physiology, the mammalian dive reflex, lung physiology, equalisation techniques, freediving safety rules, and equipment. The Molchanovs online learning platform (Molchanovs.com) delivers pre-course study material you complete before arriving — this keeps in-water time focused on technique.
Pool/Confined Water Sessions (4–6 hours): Static apnea (STA), dynamic apnea with fins (DYN), and basic rescue techniques. You will practice buddy procedures, turns, and surface protocols. Equalisation drills begin in the pool.
Open Water Sessions (6–8 hours): Constant weight freediving, free immersion, duck dives, and depth orientation. Sessions happen over two half-days at depth.
Certification Requirements
To pass Molchanovs Wave 2 you must complete:
- STA: 2 minutes 30 seconds static breath-hold
- DYN: 50 metres dynamic with fins
- CWT: 20 metres constant weight
These are pass thresholds — most students exceed them comfortably by course end. The STA requirement is the most anxiety-inducing for new students; the 2:30 is achievable with proper relaxation technique for almost everyone.
Where to Take the Course in India
Andaman Islands (Havelock): Best conditions November–April. Several operators on Havelock offer Molchanovs-certified instruction. Book 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season.
Goa: Year-round courses available; off-season water visibility is reduced. Suitable for pool-heavy certification prep before an Andaman open-water trip.
Pondicherry: Flat, calm sea conditions off the coast; limited depth compared to Andaman (15–20m max without moving away from shore). Good for beginners nervous about deep open water.
Typical Cost (2026)
Course fees in India range from ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 depending on location, operator, and what is included. Andaman-based courses typically cost more due to logistics but include better open-water conditions. Equipment rental is usually included or available at modest additional cost.
International certification processing (Molchanovs digital card) costs approximately ₹2,000–₹3,000 extra.
What Comes Next
Molchanovs Wave 2 certifies you to dive to approximately 20m with a trained buddy. From here, the progression is:
- Molchanovs Wave 3 — 30m, advanced technique, mouthfill equalisation
- Molchanovs Wave 4 — 40m, competition preparation, no-fins technique
- Molchanovs Instructor — teaching pathway
Most recreational freedivers are happy at Wave 2 or Wave 3. The Molchanovs certification is internationally recognised and accepted at freediving operators worldwide.
