Freediving
Goa
Easy access, certified instructors, and a year-round pool-to-ocean progression path.
Goa is the most accessible entry point to ocean freediving for divers from Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. The coastline offers calm bay conditions from October to March, with a growing number of AIDA-certified instructors running pool and open-water courses. While visibility does not match the Andamans or Lakshadweep, Goa's convenience — direct flights from every major city, excellent accommodation, and a relaxed atmosphere — makes it the default choice for working professionals doing their first AIDA course. Grand Island, a 45-minute boat ride from Vasco, is the main open-water training site and offers coral gardens at 5–20m depth.
Dive Sites
Grand Island
5–22mThe most popular dive site in Goa, accessed by boat from Vasco da Gama. Three sections — Suzy's Wreck, Sail Rock, and Bounty Bay — offer varied conditions for all levels. Visibility peaks in November–January.
Suzy's Wreck
12–22mA sunken vessel sitting at 22m off Grand Island. The wreck is a magnet for marine life — moray eels, lionfish, and schools of snapper call it home. An excellent site for depth training.
Bogmalo Bay
3–12mA sheltered bay used for AIDA 1 open-water sessions. Calm conditions, easy access, and a sandy bottom make it ideal for beginners transitioning from pool to ocean for the first time.

Getting There
Goa International Airport (GOX/Dabolim) is served by all major Indian carriers with direct flights from Mumbai (1h), Delhi (2h), Bangalore (1h), and Chennai (1.5h). Taxi or pre-booked transfers to North or South Goa take 30–60 minutes. Dive operators are primarily concentrated in Calangute, Baga (North Goa), and Vasco/Bogmalo (South Goa) — choose your base based on which you book your course with.
Where to Stay
South Goa is quieter and closer to the Grand Island dive sites. Vasco and Bogmalo offer budget and mid-range options. North Goa has a wider range of restaurants and nightlife, but adds 30–45 minutes to your journey to the dive site. Most freediving instructors in Goa operate flexible schedules and will accommodate your accommodation choice.
Freediving Courses
Goa has multiple active AIDA 1 and AIDA 2 instructors, with courses running October–March. An AIDA 1 can often be completed in a single day with one pool session and one open-water session. Check the FAI instructor directory for certified instructors currently active in Goa.
